Modelling by the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Indigenous and Environmental Histories and Futures, published in Nature Human Behaviour, estimates Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population at 2.2 million before the 1788 First Fleet arrival, compared with early estimates of 250,000.
