2.2 million people lived in Australia before 1788
About 2.2 million Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, Australia's First Peoples, lived here before the First Fleet arrived in 1788, researchers estimate, versus early guesses of 250,000. The number, a reconstruction from historical clues, is from the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Indigenous and Environmental Histories and Futures, published in Nature Human Behaviour.
