H5 Bird Flu Kills Endangered Sea Lion at Seal Bay

South Australia confirmed its first H5 bird flu — a severe avian influenza strain — death in an endangered Australian sea lion found dead at Seal Bay, Kangaroo Island, Environment Minister Emily Bourke announced 13 September 2026. Seal Bay holds about 800 animals, of a national population under 10,000 already falling 2% a year.
