Rare Sea Lion Dies of Bird Flu at Seal Bay

South Australia confirmed its first H5 bird flu, a contagious bird virus, death in an endangered Australian sea lion found dead at Seal Bay on Kangaroo Island, Environment Minister Emily Bourke announced 13 September 2026. Seal Bay is home to about 800 sea lions, part of fewer than 10,000 nationwide, with numbers shrinking 2% each year.
