First H5 bird flu death confirmed in endangered Australian sea lion at Seal Bay

South Australia confirmed its first H5 bird flu death in an endangered Australian sea lion found dead at Seal Bay on Kangaroo Island. Environment minister Emily Bourke announced the finding on 13 September 2026. Seal Bay holds about 800 animals, part of a national population estimated below 10,000 and already declining 2% yearly.
