
Hong Kong's First Post-Handover Leader, Tung Chee-hwa, Dies at 89
Tung Chee-hwa, Hong Kong's first Chief Executive after the 1997 handover from Britain to China, died September 8, 2026, at 89. His office said he died peacefully. Tung governed under the "one country, two systems" framework until 2005, then became vice-chairman of China's top political advisory body.
