Tung Chee-hwa, Hong Kong's First Leader Under Chinese Rule, Dies at 89

Tung Chee-hwa, Hong Kong's first Chief Executive under Chinese rule, died on September 8, 2026, at age 89. His office said he died peacefully. Tung assumed office on July 1, 1997, the day Britain returned Hong Kong to China under the "one country, two systems" framework. He served until 2005, later becoming vice-chairman of China's top political advisory body.
