Hong Kong's First Leader Under China, Tung Chee-hwa, Dies at 89

Tung Chee-hwa, who led Hong Kong after Britain returned the territory to China in 1997, died September 8, 2026, at 89. His office said he died peacefully. Tung served as the city's top official until 2005 under a deal letting Hong Kong keep its own way of life. He later advised China's government.
