Mladić Dies in UN Detention After Failed Compassionate Release Bid

Ratko Mladić, the Bosnian Serb commander convicted of genocide in 2017, died at 84 in a UN prison at The Hague. A UN court denied his compassionate release — an early discharge on humanitarian grounds — in May. He received palliative care and died in custody, his life sentence, upheld on appeal in 2021, served in full.
