Crown Estate awards 4.5 GW floating wind licence in Celtic Sea
The Crown Estate has awarded Ocean Winds development rights for a floating offshore wind site in the Celtic Sea, capable of generating up to 4.5 gigawatts. The project, announced in the government's Industrial Strategy update in April 2026, would rank among the world's largest floating wind assets. Floating turbines—moored rather than fixed to the seabed—are essential for deep waters. The scheme requires further approvals from Westminster, the Welsh Senedd, and electricity grid connection.
