Crown Estate awards 4.5 GW floating wind licence in Celtic Sea
The Crown Estate has granted Ocean Winds development rights for a floating offshore wind site in the Celtic Sea capable of generating up to 4.5 GW. The project, announced in the government's Industrial Strategy quarterly update published in April 2026, would rank among the world's largest floating wind assets if fully built. Floating turbines—moored rather than fixed to the seabed—are necessary for the Celtic Sea's deep waters. The project requires further consents across Westminster, the Welsh Senedd, and Grid connection before construction begins.
