Regional councils to go by 2028 under local government reform

The government's "Simplifying Local Government" reform will remove elected regional councillors by the 2028 local elections. Councils can voluntarily reorganise through a fast-track process — 18 proposals have been submitted — or face imposed structural change. Officials decide by late September whether plans are viable. Approved plans are signed off in 2027.
