Federal by-elections in 2026 projected to cost over $24-million

Elections Canada estimates 2026 federal by-elections will cost taxpayers over $24-million. Three have been held, three are set for August 31, and up to six more vacancies could push the total to 12 — the most since 1978. The comparable figure for 11 by-elections in 2017 was about $10-million.
