2026 by-elections on track to be the costliest in decades

When a seat in Parliament opens before the next general election, voters pick a replacement in a by-election. Elections Canada says the ones held in 2026 will cost over $24-million. As many as 12 could take place — the most since 1978. A similar batch of 11 in 2017 cost about $10-million.
