Federal by-elections in 2026 projected to cost over $24-million

Elections Canada estimates federal by-elections in 2026 will cost taxpayers upwards of $24-million. Three have been held, three are set for August 31, and up to six more vacancies could bring the year's total to 12 — the most since 1978. The 2017 comparable, 11 by-elections, cost about $10-million.
