Whanganui says no to fast-track council reform, teams up with neighbours

Whanganui council voted 8-4 against using the government's fast-track reform option for local councils. Instead it signed an agreement with Rangitīkei and Ruapehu to work on changes together. Mayor Andrew Tripe said the council needed more time for planning. Whanganui's reforms will now start after the 2028 local elections. Cabinet decides in September which fast-track proposals move ahead, with final calls in 2027.
