UN Says Uganda Is Silencing Critics After Its Election

The UN's top rights official, Volker Türk, condemned Uganda on July 30, 2026. Since January's election, at least 60 opponents, journalists, and activists have been arrested without cause, secretly detained, or tortured. Ten advocacy groups were shut down and media outlets closed. Türk warned Uganda is "creating a climate of fear" and called on the military to stop meddling in civilian government.
