Uganda's Opposition Leader Besigye Rushed to Hospital After Collapsing in Court

Kizza Besigye, a 70-year-old Ugandan opposition leader, collapsed in a Kampala courtroom on July 29 after judges refused to let his chosen lawyers represent him. He is now in intensive care and "unresponsive even to a pain stimulus," according to his wife, UNAIDS chief Winnie Byanyima. Besigye has faced treason charges since Kenya sent him back to Uganda in November 2024. His lead lawyer, Erias Lukwago, has also been detained.
