Ugandan Opposition Leader Besigye in Intensive Care After Collapsing in Court
Kizza Besigye, 70, collapsed in a Kampala courtroom on July 29, 2026, after protesting the denial of his chosen lawyers. He is now in intensive care at Mulago hospital, reportedly "unresponsive even to a pain stimulus," according to his wife, UNAIDS chief Winnie Byanyima. Besigye has been held on treason charges since his repatriation from Kenya in November 2024. His lead lawyer, Erias Lukwago, has also been detained.
