Government can force Wellington councils to merge, mayor says

Wellington Mayor Andrew Little told RNZ the government set up the merger process so it can override councils that vote no. "Ministers can say it doesn't make sense for you not to be in it, therefore you're in it," he said. Upper Hutt Mayor Peri Zee says her city will vote against joining. Councils have until August 9 to decide.
