New AI model from Anthropic matches rival at much lower cost

Anthropic released Claude Opus 5 on July 24, 2026. In coding tests, it nearly matches the top rival, Fable 5, at half the cost. In computer-use tests, it beats Fable 5 at about a third of the cost. Opus 5 is now the default on Claude Max and the strongest model on Claude Pro. It trails Mythos 5 on cybersecurity tasks.
