Government steps in to keep NZ's only cement plant open

The Government will give up to $60 million to stop Golden Bay Cement's Northland plant closing, Economic Growth Minister Nicola Willis said. The plant makes most of New Zealand's cement — the powder used to make concrete. Without help, carbon costs would have shut it by 2030, meaning cement shipped from overseas. Owner Fletcher Building will invest $150 million by 2040. The deal's terms are secret.
