Big Panama Earthquake Triggers Pacific Tsunami Alert

A very strong 8.0 earthquake shook near Panama at 10:56:08 AM, about 21 miles underground. At 18:02:20 UTC on Oct. 9, 2026, the U.S. tsunami alert system issued its first warning, called 'Non-US/Canada Pacific Threat #1.' It is now checking the whole Pacific for dangerous waves, and will update to confirm or change the warning.
