
Borrowing for 30 Years Now Costs 5.69%
The U.S. government now pays 5.69% a year to borrow for 30 years — the highest in 24 years, CNN reported Oct. 1. Think of it as the base price for borrowing. Reuters notes the $29 trillion Treasury market for government IOUs sets that base for almost everything, so mortgages and other loans can get pricier.
