Why thousands of school library books were pulled
PEN America says U.S. public schools removed books nearly 12,000 times in 2025-2026, the most since 2021. Altogether, 34,000 removals have hit over 7,000 different books in 114 school areas. It blames new state laws limiting books; how officials enforce them will decide what stays.
