Why the UK is paying more to borrow money

On 1 Oct 2026, the UK's cost to borrow for 30 years hit 6%, first time since 1998. Costs for 5- and 10-year borrowing rose too, like higher interest on all loans. Investors sold off fearing Middle East fighting will cut oil and raise prices. That gives Chancellor John Healey little spending room before late-October budget.
