Māori students struggling in alternative schooling system

Government education inspectors found schools outside the traditional system lack decent buildings, trained teachers and plans to help students move ahead. Māori students attend these schools at higher rates. Student attendance dropped sharply before 2020 and got worse during the pandemic. Problems fall hardest on those already facing the toughest circumstances.
