Māori students bear the cost of alternative education gaps

The Education Review Office found alternative education providers lack adequate facilities, qualified teachers, and transition planning. Māori students make up a disproportionate share of the sector, where attendance declined sharply between 2015 and 2019 and worsened during COVID-19. Quality gaps in the system fall hardest on students already navigating compounding disadvantage.
