Conservatives propose lower benefits for people jobless long term

The Conservatives have proposed cutting the main benefit, Universal Credit, to 70% — a new Subsistence Allowance — for people judged able to work but still jobless after six months without sufficient contributions. The BBC reported on 23 September the party said 350,000 would be affected, saving £538m a year. Sick, disabled and working claimants would be exempt.
