Labour would leave landlord tax break as it is
Labour leader Chris Hipkins says Labour would leave landlord tax rules unchanged if elected, RNZ reported on 21 September. Landlords can now count loan interest as a cost, cutting their tax bill. Hipkins said Labour would keep that and back a capital gains tax on profit from selling property instead. The coalition Government restored the rule in 2024, RNZ reported.
