California Wants Safety Inspectors Inside AI Companies

California Gov. Gavin Newsom's Sept. 18, 2026 order proposes outside inspectors work inside companies building the most powerful AI to regularly check their systems for safety. Like health inspectors in restaurants, they would keep testing whether a proposed emergency shutoff for the AI actually works.
