Founder of Leading Philippine Newspaper Dies at 100

Eugenia Duran Apostol, called Eggie, who founded and led the Philippine Daily Inquirer newspaper, died in her sleep Sept. 13 at 100. She reported the news for more than 50 years and became known for independent reporting outside government control. She would have turned 101 Sept. 29.
