Google helps write safety rules for talking programs, seeks exceptions for popular ones

Google is helping state lawmakers write safety rules for chatbots, or computer programs that talk with people, while asking that widely used chatbots be left out, according to Sept. 18 reporting. Many state bills had heavy industry input. Some 2026 laws leave out popular bots. The federal government has passed no broad AI law.
