China Opens New Shortcut Canal to the Sea

China opened its 134km Pinglu Canal in Guangxi on September 16, 2026. Called China's first modern canal linking a river to the sea, it works like a man-made shortcut joining the Xijiang River to the Beibu Gulf. It lets inland southwest provinces Yunnan and Guizhou ship goods directly to the sea and Southeast Asian trade routes.
