South Auckland has few trees. New laws may mean even fewer.

Māngere-Otahuhu has trees covering just 9 percent of the area, compared with 20 percent across Auckland. New laws going through Parliament would only protect trees valued for their history. Local tree expert Zane Wedding says many trees were already cut down after earlier protections ended in 2015. Minister Chris Bishop said trees with heritage value stay protected.
