France loosens strict cheese rules after drought ruins cow pastures

France lets makers of at least seven traditional mountain cheeses — including Comté — feed cows outside hay and grain instead of fresh local grass, after a July 2026 drought hit 95% of mainland France. These cheeses normally must come from cows grazing on local land. The agency that sets those rules, INAO, called the drought "historic."
