
U.S. Tells Countries Worldwide to Close Iran's Bank Branches
On August 25, 2026, the U.S. Treasury Secretary told foreign governments to shut down all branches of Iran's Bank Melli — a bank the U.S. says secretly moved money to Iranian military groups abroad. The campaign, called "Operation Economic Outcast," began in July 2026. But closures only happen if other countries agree to act; the U.S. can't force them alone.
