Victoria lets voters rank parties themselves instead of letting parties choose

Victoria's parliament voted 33–4 on 11 August 2026 to stop political parties from deciding how voters' backup choices flow to other candidates. Now voters must rank at least five parties on the ballot. Analyst Antony Green says the old system let about 20 candidates win seats in a decade with under 6% of the vote. It starts in November's election.
