Federal government helps cover shipping costs for Canadian steel

Ottawa launched a $100-million program on August 10, 2026, to help pay for shipping Canadian steel between provinces and territories. Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon announced the one-year fund in Hamilton. It covers half of freight costs by rail or boat. The goal: sell more steel within Canada, since U.S. tariffs — taxes on imports — have cut off exports south.
