Ottawa launches $100-million rebate to cut interprovincial steel shipping costs

Ottawa launched a $100-million rebate program on August 10, 2026, covering 50 per cent of eligible rail and marine freight costs for Canadian steel shipped between provinces and territories. Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon announced the program in Hamilton. The fund runs up to one year and aims to redirect steel to domestic markets as U.S. tariffs of 50 per cent restrict exports south.
