71% of secondary teachers want NCEA improved, not replaced — despite government plan to scrap it

An NZCER survey of 830 secondary teachers across 126 schools found 71% want NCEA improved rather than removed, with 45% strongly agreeing. Principals echoed the view at 70%. The finding clashes with the coalition government's agreed plan to replace NCEA with a new qualifications pathway starting in 2028. The Ministry has not yet published consultation outcomes.
