Amazon Backs West Texas Gas Plant With CO2 Permit Exceeding the Largest U.S. Coal Plant

Amazon confirmed it is investing in a 7.65 GW natural-gas plant in Pecos County, Texas, to power a dedicated data center. The GW Ranch project holds a Texas permit allowing up to 33 million tons of CO2 — more than the largest U.S. coal plant. The facility would operate off-grid, outside ERCOT oversight. Amazon's carbon emissions have risen for several years, driven by AI compute demand.
