CRISPR-Edited Beagles Are First Dogs Freed of Major Allergen Protein

Kindred Companion Sciences used CRISPR-Cas9 to produce two beagles, Bailey and Alfie, lacking Can f 1, the major dog allergen. Published August 5, 2026, in the CRISPR Journal, the work is the first successful gene editing for hypoallergenic traits in dogs. Testing found no Can f 1 in saliva or fur, and a skin-prick test on one allergic researcher produced no reaction. Broader human testing is still needed, and Can f 1 is not the only dog allergen.
