NZ First proposes $5,000-a-year 'Kiwi Kids Grant' to lift birth rate

New Zealand First leader Winston Peters has proposed a universal, tax-free "Kiwi Kids Grant" of $5,000 a year for each child's first three years, capped at three children per family. One parent must be a New Zealand citizen. The party costed the policy at $400 million over three years, funded through operating baselines. Peters cited a "population precipice." ACT's David Seymour said other countries have tried cash incentives for children without results.
