DeepMind abandons grand-challenge research model, dismantles AlphaFold team for Gemini

Google DeepMind is moving away from the grand-challenge research model that produced AlphaGo and AlphaFold, VP of Research Pushmeet Kohli confirmed. The AlphaFold team has been dismantled: key staff reassigned to Gemini projects, others moved to Isomorphic Labs, and Nobel laureate John Jumper departed for Anthropic in June. The AlphaFold database and published methods remain publicly available.
