Government moves to buy strike drones after June said budget was for surveillance only

The New Zealand government is moving to procure human-operated strike drones capable of delivering explosive payloads, Defence Minister Chris Penk announced. The systems would not be autonomous. In June, the Defence Ministry said the drone budget was for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance only — not a weapons system. It later clarified that autonomous weapons were off the table but human-guided ones were not.
