Wikimedia Foundation declines voluntary union recognition, will proceed to NLRB election

The Wikimedia Foundation said July 27, 2026, that an NLRB-supervised secret ballot is the "appropriate path forward" rather than voluntarily recognizing Wiki Workers United (CWA). The union called it "classic union-busting rhetoric" and will file for an election. UK staff announced union plans in June; in May, volunteer editors threatened to strike over a dissolved engineering team.
