Anthropic's Amodei backs chip export controls, splitting with Nvidia on AI governance

Amodei linked open-weights policy to chip export controls on July 27, endorsing U.S. restrictions on advanced semiconductor exports to China and smuggling crackdowns. Nvidia, which organized an open-weights letter with 50 signatories by July 25, has been among the loudest opponents of those export restrictions. The two companies now sit on opposite sides of frontier-AI governance.
