Aukus submarine waste will stay weapons-grade at Hiroshima-bomb enrichment levels

Spent fuel from Australia's Aukus nuclear submarines will remain enriched to about 80% uranium-235 — the same level as the Hiroshima bomb — experts told the Aukus public inquiry. Nuclear specialists say the material could be reprocessed into scores of warheads and will stay weapons-usable for hundreds of thousands of years. No nation has solved how to store it.
