Lower Hutt mayor backs Wellington super-city merger proposal

Lower Hutt mayor Fauono Ken Laban has publicly backed the MartinJenkins proposal to merge Wellington's councils into a single super-city entity. Laban told RNZ's Morning Report he supported the plan but said, "I can't speak on behalf of the other mayors." The region's amalgamation debate was reignited in 2024 by water and rates crises.
